KCEA Hosts Life Skills Workshop

Each year, KCEA hosts two Life Skills Workshops. These workshops bring students, their families, and members of the broader community together to learn from community leaders and KCEA alumni on important topics including hygiene, food safety, child rights, and female wellness.

As the saying in Kenya goes, “When you educate a woman, you educate the entire community”, this is especially true for KCEA students as their families also receive education and support from KCEA and community leaders. Many of these parents are the first in their village to send their child to secondary school so through these Life Skills workshops, they are able to gain a deeper understanding of how valuable continued education is for their children.

Due to Covid-19, the Spring Life Skills workshop in 2020 was postponed so the December workshop was the only chance to gather students and their families in 2020.

December’s Life Skills Workshop covered five incredibly important topics:

  1. Adolescent Stage Changes

  2. Education on the dangers of female genital cutting (FGC)& early marriages

  3. Teenage Pregnancy

  4. The impact of educating girls among marginalized communities

  5. Child Rights

These topics are sensitive and in many cases tied to deep cultural history and norms. John and Peris, KCEAs Founders, are part of the local Maasai community and have seen firsthand the impact that educating families on these topics has, on their children and on the broader community.

After an incredibly tough year of home-based learning, this was the first time for the students to gather and was also a time filled with joy, excitement, and celebration!

KCEA students write letters to their sponsors with updates on their families, education, and to share their dreams for the future.
